Research indicates that Individuals with mental health conditions tend to live a shorter life. Many studies have found that those with mental health challenges, such as depression, schizophrenia, and others, tend to experience shorter lives when compared with those who do not have any mental health conditions.

When you are experiencing emotional or mental distress, it is good to meet with a professional to help you process the issues troubling your mind. There is a connection between mental health and physical health. One of the areas that there is a link between mental and physical health is in longevity.

Researchers hypothesize that one reason for the increase in respiratory disease, heart disease and cancer risk is that individuals with mental health conditions are less likely to seek care for their physical health.

Unhealthy habits such as smoking, lack of exercise, drug and substance use can play a role in health conditions. Individuals’ sense of optimism also has an impact on their health. Positive emotions may decrease the rate of disease’s progression, but the absence of negative emotions is not the same thing as the presence of positive emotions.

Even though the mind and body are separate, mental, and physical health are closely related. Good mental health can positively impact your physical health.

  • Get regular exercise. Exercise is important for keeping physically fit, but it can also help improve your mood. A daily 10- 20-minute walk may increase your mental alertness leaving you energetic and in a good mood.
  • Eat a proper diet. A diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in processed sugars or fats can make you feel better physically and mentally. Consider working with a qualified nutritionist to help you create a diet plan customized according to your needs.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs. Although drinking and smoking may make you feel better in the short term, they can have a negative effect on both your physical and mental health.
  • Get enough sleep. A good night’s sleep is around seven to nine hours for adults. You can also take a 30-minute nap during the day to feel more alert.
  • Try relaxation techniques. Meditation, deep breathing, and focusing your thoughts can all help when you are feeling stressed.
  • Develop good mental practices. Try to focus on positive emotions and events rather than negative ones.
  • Seek help from others. Talking with friends or family members can help you feel less stressed. Getting others to help with difficult situations can also reduce the burden you feel.
  • Seek for profession help. A counsellor or psychologist may walk you through your situation to untie the difficult areas. Psychotherapy can boost your progress into good mental health that can take you a long way in your life.
